When we received an invitation from SportCares to participate in a Sepak Takraw Tournament, we were hesitant to accept. It was only a week away and we were not sure if we could rally enough interest among our youth members in the different neighbourhoods. Nonetheless, we put the word out and within the day, we realised that our anxiety was unnecessary.
Regus or Teams from different neigbourhoods started registering with us which affirmed our belief in the strength of people’s ability to self-organise around their interest and aspirations. These young people loved the game and aspired to excel. All they needed was an opportunity.
We are grateful for our long-time friendship with Sport Cares, the philanthropic arm of Sport Singapore. By cooperating, we offer experiences where people from different backgrounds come together around a shared interest meeting everyone’s need for participation, belonging and well-being.
What is critical for such events to be meaningful experiences is that their intended participants are involved. This tournament that was held last Saturday did so and it was because of youth leaders who could mobilise their peers. The 2 youth who helped us were meticulous in putting together the necessary logistics. During the tournament, they keenly looked out for the safety of everyone, advocated for and modelled sportsmanship.
When the event wrapped up, we acknowledged their contribution. We asked if their leadership qualities were driven by their passion for the game. Both nodded but added they deeply believed in the value of sport. One told us that the game gave him a way to get to know his peers and younger youth in his neighbourhood. He saw his efforts as building trust among people so that they could “support each other to always stay positive.” The other smiled and agreed. He told us that he was cared for in residential facility when he was younger, and sport was an important way of caring for people in the community.
